|Dichroic glass, which was first used in the space industry, is regular glass that has been treated with metal oxides such as titanium, silicon and magnesium. The result is clear or black glass that appears to have a film on it. Once the glass is fired in a kiln, the melted dichroic coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. A single piece of glass appears as many different colors at different angles and in different lighting.|
The effect is similar to that of an opal.
